Embedded Systems Engineer

Description

A business involved in the design and development of products for subsea instrumentation that include electronics hardware and embedded microcontroller based systems are looking to recruit an embedded software engineer to the team. The role is an R&D and development role, so you will be involved in new product design, while working on existing applications. The successful candidate should have the ability to interface with other areas of the business and feel comfortable doing so, these areas include, sales and production.

The business is part of a larger group of companies who are renowned for being a group of diverse and niche businesses, specialising in unique areas where there if high margins and return on their investment. They specialise in electronic instrumentation, and electromechanical devices, and with sales of $3.4 billion and 13300 staff worldwide, and over 100 sites, this is a unique opportunity to join a stable and successful organisation, that can offer talented employee’s opportunities. This is combined with the fact you will be working at a site in County Durham, which has still retained its atmosphere as an SME, with a family run atmosphere and is not constrained by the red tape you find at such large organisations. The holding company is renowned for not interfering in the various business unit it holds, it provides back up, support, funding for R&D and the ability to pay competitive salaries, however the day to day running is left to the business unit. Candidates should hold a relevant degree qualification preferably in embedded/ electronic engineering with a minimum of 5 years experience to demonstrate proven technical skills in the following areas

* Familiarity with microcontrollers with an understanding of processor architectures and peripherals

* Proficient in ‘C/C++’ implementation, test and debug for real time applications running on embedded microcontrollers or PC104 embedded PCs

* Familiarity with QNX Neutrino and IPC aspects of the operating system

* Extensive knowledge in electronics design including analogue and digital interfaces

* Testing/debugging of embedded software, protocols and interoperability

* Writing test specifications for embedded systems with focus on software testing

* An appreciation of communication layers (eg RS232, RS485, CAN) and protocols (eg Modbus, CANopen, Profibus, Ethernet, OSI model)

* Understanding of engineering drawings and documentation

* Proven commercial or equivalent experience of at least one high level programming language (eg MS Visual C++, MS C#.NET, MS VB.NET)

* Support and maintenance of existing source code

* Working knowledge of PC based office tools including word processor and spreadsheet applications

* Circuit design and PCB layout

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial

* RF Electronics (sub 2GHz)

* Software design lifecycle

* Microchip PIC/ARM microcontrollers

* CANopen and Modbus communication protocols

* Software versioning control

* National Instruments LabVIEW
