Laboratory Quality Engineer

The role

Fugro are recruiting for a Laboratory Quality Engineer to join the Geotechnical Laboratory based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, reporting directly to the Laboratory Quality Manager. The laboratory uses state of the art equipment to analyse soil and rock samples from our projects around the world. Your role will be to oversee all areas of the laboratory quality management system, taking responsibility for equipment calibration, quality assurance and quality control of testing, the evaluation of test results and conducting audits.

This job is for you if:

  • You have excellent attention to detail and enjoy work which requires patience and focus;
  • You are highly analytical with a critical eye and enjoy the very specialised work of reviewing and correcting data;
  • You are highly numerate and literate and enjoy writing technical documents.

Who you’ll be working with:

On a daily basis you will be working closely with the Laboratory Quality Manager providing support in all quality matters as well as liaising closely with Laboratory Team Leaders and Technicians.

Here’s what a typical week would be like:

  • One or two days a week would be spent dealing with equipment calibrations;
  • One day would be spent updating records for calibrations;
  • One day would be spent checking quality records are up to date;
  • Half a day would be spent troubleshooting issues with testing equipment, systems and processes;
  • Half a day would be spent performing internal technical audits.

Who we’re looking for:


  • 5+ GCSEs including English, Maths and Science and 2+ A-levels including at least Maths and another science subject or equivalent qualifications;
  • General knowledge/use of maths: algebra, statistics, functions, geometry;
  • Previous experience in a geotechnical or materials testing lab;
  • Good numeracy and literacy: able to write technical documents and draw technical forms;
  • Eye for detail, diligent in following procedures;
  • Manage large data input, skilled in reviewing and correcting data;
  • Proficient in use of all MS Office applications.


  • Bachelor’s degree in technical / scientific / geotechnical subject or equivalent qualification;
  • Preferred previous experience with of ISO 17025 and accredited laboratories.
