Specialist Biomedical Scientist

  • Salary Type: Per Annum
  • Salary: £24,000

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our busy, friendly and professional Clinical Chemistry Team. This exciting post would be ideal for scientists with multi-discipline experience or for those looking to expand their current knowledge base. Further training is always encouraged and supported.

The Specialist Biomedical Scientist will work as a key member of the team, helping to deliver a continuously improving and high quality service. The post-holder will also be expected to act as a mentor for more junior scientific and support staff, and where required, to lead and supervise a sub-section of the laboratory in the absence of senior staff.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital is the principal provider of emergency, acute, specialist and community healthcare to the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. As such, you will be expected to participate in the current rota system covering an extended working day (8am - 8pm) which allows for some flexibility in working patterns. Following suitable training a place on the out-of-hour’s rota will be allocated, which currently attracts a sessional payment and good paid recovery time. The current out-of-hour’s system is due to be replaced with a rolling shift pattern, which this post-holder will be expected to join.

The Department is in the progress of reconfiguring Clinical Chemistry and Haematology into a combined Blood Sciences Department. We are re-equipping the laboratory with the latest analytical and pre-analytical equipment. Staffs at all levels are involved in this important transition and the successful candidate would play an integral role in the development of the joint Blood Sciences Department. Our aim is to provide a cost effective, comprehensive and forward-looking quality service.

The current Chemistry Department comprises of two laboratories: an automated lab for routine and urgent work that processes approximately 3,000 samples a day using 3x Abbott ci16200 analysers; and a special assay laboratory that employs a variety of methods including HPLC and ELISA to measure and monitor analytes such as metadrenalines, HbA1c, and calprotectin.

For potential applicants that may be looking for a change of lifestyle, Cornwall offers the ultimate countryside lifestyle with surfing off Atlantic coves, sailing on the south coast, hiking across granite moors, and many sandy beaches to visit with friends or family. The dog friendly county is famous for crumbly Yarg cheese, pasties and clotted cream teas. These can be enjoyed at any of the abundant National Trust sites, small harbour towns or even at the Eden Project. Cornwall also has its own airport with regular flights within the UK and Europe and excellent road transport links.

This is a full time post of 37.5 hours per week.
