Senior Scientist, Pipeline Protein Engineering (Protein Sciences)

SENIOR SCIENTIST, PIPELINE PROTEIN ENGINEERINGPROTEIN SCIENCESABINGDON, OXFORDSHIRE, UKROLE OVERVIEWAdaptimmune is a leading T-cell therapy company, designing and developing adoptive cell therapies for treating cancer.  The Company's unique SPEAR (Specific Peptide Enhanced Affinity Receptor) T‑cell platform enables the engineering of T-cells to target and destroy cancer, including solid tumours.  The Pipeline Engineering group, in Protein Sciences, has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist with a strong background in protein engineering and high throughput screening. The team is focused on developing optimised molecules for T-cell therapy, such as T-cell receptors with optimal affinity, potency, and specificity to their cancer protein/peptide target.  The team is growing to keep up with the internal demand for engineered TCRs as well as fulfilling collaboration agreements with our external partners. The primary purpose of this role is to conduct scientific experiments to enable optimisation of lead candidate molecules.  The Senior Scientist will be expected to work independently in both the conduct and analysis of their experiments but will still require scientific guidance at some level from the Line Manager.  The successful candidate will require an industrial background in molecular biology and protein engineering approaches applied to the antibody, TCR or CAR-T field as well as in-depth knowledge of cell-based assays for high throughput screening of engineered lead candidates. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES• Conducting lab work and supporting colleagues, the department and Adaptimmune’s projects (e.g. molecular biology and cell biology techniques such as DNA mutagenesis and cloning, transfection and lentiviral transduction of cell lines, cell based high throughput assays and flow cytometry).• In collaboration with other team members plan, analyse, summarise and record experimental results, and maintain relevant databases and records (e.g.  electronic lab book).• Participate in department and project meetings and discussions.• Routine lab maintenance.QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCERequired• Undergraduate degree in Life sciences, or related discipline.• Relevant post-graduate industry experience within pharma or biotech space, preferably including a MSc or PhD in a pertinent scientific area.• Extensive relevant experience of laboratory procedures, such as molecular biology methods, protein engineering and cell-based assays for high throughput screening of engineered lead candidates.• Experience in antibody, TCR or CAR-T field.• Ability to work independently on routine experiments.• Experience of mentoring junior scientists.Desirable • An in depth understanding of protein engineering in T-cell therapy space.• Experience with process optimisation and automation.• Familiar with coding languages, especially in R.SKILLS & COMPETENCIESRequired• Experience in cell-based assays for high throughput screening (e.g. reporter-gene cell lines, luminescence readouts, flow cytometry).• Experience with cell culture including multiple cell lines, lentivirus preps, cell transductions/transfections, and associated work.• Knowledge and skills to use more specialist lab equipment (such as flow cytometers and plate readers).• Knowledge and skills to use of standard laboratory equipment.• Computer literate, with ability to familiarise with different IT systems.• Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal).• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).• Ability to write and follow protocols.• Ability to design experiments and studies to address key scientific questions.• High attention to detail and good time management skills.• Strong team player but with the ability to work independently as well.Desirable• Familiarity with more specialist lab equipment e.g. cell sorting.• Ability to write standard operating procedures, experiment plans and reports.• Advanced experimental design skills (improvements, next steps).• Technical interest and enthusiasm.• Experience in protein biochemistry (e.g. protein purification and affinity determination). At Adaptimmune we embrace diversity and equality of opportunity. We believe that the more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. We welcome applications to join our team from all qualified candidates, regardless of age, colour, disability, marital status, national origin, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status or other legally protected category. It is our intent that all qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment.
