Biomedical Scientist (Newly Qualified) / Biomedical Scientist


Applications are invited from qualified, enthusiastic and well-motivated Biomedical Scientists, holding a BSc in Biomedical Science and currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to join our Microbiology team. The successful candidate will be appointed to Band 5 or 6 dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Applicants for the Band 6 post require a minimum of 2 years post registration experience within a NHS Clinical Microbiology Laboratory with demonstrable post graduate knowledge of Medical Microbiology, such as the IBMS Specialist Diploma. Band 6 applicants will be expected to provide an evidence portfolio to demonstrate their specialist knowledge base. Experience in UKAS accreditation, IQA, EQA and audit is expected. Experience in training and mentorship is desirable.

Band 5 post holder will be expected to successfully complete a portfolio for progression to a Band 6 post. Annex 20 This BAND 5 post falls within the provisions of Agenda for Change Annex 20 - Development of Professional Roles, whereby upon completion of an agreed set of competencies you may move onto the next pay band without the need for an application for a post at a higher level.

All candidates should have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, and the ability to work without close supervision. A flexible approach to working is essential as the department provides a 24 hour, seven day week service and you will be required to support and participate in the 24/7 shift system. This comprises of early shifts, day shifts, late shifts and night shifts, Monday to Sunday including all bank holidays. You will be required to rotate around all sections of the laboratory and have the ability to manage your own work area once trained and competency assessed.

Microbiology services for the Trust are located at North Tyneside General Hospital, serving the General hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at Cramlington, as well as a number of community hospitals. The department serves a population of 550,000 both Acute and Primary Care, with Primary Care accounting for 45% of the workload. The department performs over 550,000 investigations annually. The department uses the Telepath LIMS and Q-Pulse to support the quality management system. Current laboratory technology includes the BACTEC FX, VITEK 2XL, VITEK MS (MALDI-TOF), WASP, Architect, GeneXpert, Panther, VIDAS, and the DS2.
