In-house Counsel - Thomson Reuters Foundation

Description

Join a team which has unique expertise combining the power of journalism and the law to advance media freedom, foster more inclusive economies, and promote human rights.

We are seeking an In-house Counsel to join the team in London to advise the Foundation primarily on commercial agreements, but the scope of the position will be broad.

About the Role

As In-house Counsel at the Thomson Reuters Foundation, you will be the primary provider of legal advice to the Foundation and its services, programmes and teams. The role requires a general commercial In-house Counsel skill set where you will: 

  • Review and negotiate a range of commercial contracts and agreements, (including partnership, funding and licensing agreements, service contracts, and terms & conditions for websites and services);
  • Handle potential disputes (briefing outside counsel where necessary);
  • Oversee other strategic legal issues (note that employment law expertise is not required as we rely on external advisers for this); and
  • Brief and liaise with external legal advisers on issues where you do not have the expertise or capacity to assist.

In addition to this, you will develop your skills in or utilise any pre-existing expertise to:

  • Respond to media law matters; and
  • Deal with charity law issues.

To be our In-house Counsel, you will likely:

  • Have high-quality commercial contract law expertise;
  • Have significant post-qualification experience in private practice or in-house;
  • Have some experience and/OR interest/willingness to deal with media law and/or charity law;
  • Be a versatile self-starter with an ability to design your own agenda; and take responsibility to advance and complete projects;
  • Be able to work quickly under pressure and prioritise work; and
  • Have fluency in English, with excellent written and spoken communication skills and an ability to adapt messages to different audiences.
