These positions are available for external applicants as well as existing civil servants on level transfer or promotion. New recruits to the Civil Service joining MoJ are expected to join at the band minimum.


HMCTS is working hard to ensure our justice system is accessible to all during these unprecedented times. We're focusing on priority cases, changing working practices and introducing new procedures to minimise risks to the judiciary, staff and all those who use our courts and tribunals.

The need for additional resource across our courts and tribunals services to support our response to Coronavirus (Covid-19) is expanding quickly and we are urgently looking for Administrative Officers in various locations across England and Wales to undertake key customer service and administrative duties. These opportunities will be based within one of our many courts and tribunals buildings, and require people to be flexible to work within buildings or remotely as required.

We are looking for highly motivated administrative staff with excellent customer service skills that want to join us on this challenge to ensure our world leading justice system continues to serve and meet the publics needs and expectations. We need resilient, resourceful and adaptable people to support us on this journey.

The Role:

Administrative Officers are assigned to teams to carry out a variety of general administrative duties to progress cases through the court/tribunal system or provide support to other functions within HMCTS. Some positions will require post holders to have regular contact with court / tribunal users, including members of the Judiciary and the legal profession. Administrative Officers work as part of a flexible team with regular management support. Post holders will be expected to undertake a range of the functions and responsibilities specified and are responsible for their own time.

Whilst the post holder will be allocated to a specific office base, there may be a need for flexibility to work on an ad hoc basis at other local HMCTS offices.

Essential Skills and Criteria:

  • Experience of working in an administrative role in a customer focussed environment
  • Proficient with IT and Microsoft Software packages
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

Working Hours

The primary focus of the opportunity you have applied for, is to meet the initial operational recovery demands brought on by COVID-19. Due to the nature of the work, we may require the flexibility for you to work hours that meet the operational demands of the current workload. This could require you to work 5 days over 6, Monday to Saturday, excluding Sundays. This could also include a shift pattern to work hours up to 8pm in the evening as required. Any day you work will not exceed 7.24 hours so if you were asked to work later then you would start your day in accordance with the daily hours limit.

Should you be required to work a shift pattern, either from the beginning of your contract or at a later stage, we will discuss this with you in advance and you will be given the opportunity to express a preference at this point.

Once you have commenced work on your assigned hours, these will be kept under review and should there need to vary the arrangement, you will be given reasonable notice of the change.

Fixed Term Appointment

This appointment will be made on a fixed term basis, initially until 31st March 2021. There may be scope for extending, this will be reviewed in early 2021.

Some of MoJ's terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Grading Structure Review

The Ministry of Justice is currently undergoing a review of posts which are currently graded at Band A to realign our grading structure with the majority of the wider Civil Service.

Posts advertised at Band A may be graded at either Grade 6 or Grade 7 once the review has taken place.
